Ambalangoda is most well-known for mask making and as a centre for south coast traditional dancing. Masks are made for three different types of dancing rituals: kolam, which tell satirical stories of traditional Sri Lankan colonial life, sanni, or devil dancing masks, used in a type of exorcism ceremony to heal people of persisting ailments believed inflicted by demons, and raksha masks, which are used in festivals and processions.

Kosgoda is home to the west coast's biggest and longest established turtle hatcheries.Turtle eggs are bought from local fishermen and reburied in safe locations; once hatched, the babies are kept here for a few days before being: released into the sea the short time they spend growing stronger in captivity gives them significantly higher chances of surviving when returned to the ocean. There are usually plenty of baby turtles swim-ming around in holding tanks – all five species of turtle which visit Sri Lanka eggs here, and depending on when you visit, you might see newly hatched examples of them all.

Balapitiya located 10 minutes drive from Ambalangoda is the launching spot of boat safaris along the Madu Ganga River. No fewer than 64 miniscule islands are strung along the extent of the river close to Balapitya. The safari affords the opportunity to enjoy the rich birdlife of the river.
